Blackjack Can Still be Beaten

All businesses need to make a profit to stay in business, and the bigger that business is, the more pressure there is to increase profits year in and year out. If you have stockholders the pressure to increase profits becomes monumental.

Casinos are big business - they are some of the biggest businesses in the world today. And they want to make as much profit as they can. Many casino companies have shareholders and these companies have to keep increasing their profit year after year. And little increases are not all that welcomed. Hungry shareholders want more and more.
That means each and every game must make the casino money and every year the casinos expect them to make more money than the year before. And, thankfully for them, each and every game does make them money, although not each and every game comes through each and every year with increased profits. We are now seeing some interesting changes in the gaming landscape - one very good and one very bad. Vegas is heralding these changes but you will soon see them in Atlantic City, Tunica, Biloxi and the Midwest.
Blackjack is a wonderful example of a game that started off in the 1940s and 1950s a far distant second behind the lion-king of craps, but with the publication in the 1960s and 1970s of card counting systems intended to beat the game, blackjack zoomed into the stratosphere. While hundreds of thousands of players now knew that blackjack was beatable and flocked to the tables, only a few hundred had the savvy, discipline, knowledge and bankroll to actually gain the edge over the house. It wasn’t smooth, however, because the casinos panicked.

When it first came to light that blackjack could be beaten, the casino executives immediately changed the rules of the game and added multiple-deck games. That panicked reaction first resulted in decreased play as blackjack players could see that they were losing more playing the same way as they had before. The new rules were rotten, the multiple-deck games torturous. If a player loses more, the tendency on many players’ parts is to stop playing. So the casinos put back all the old rules, although they did keep the multiple-deck games in their inventory, and blackjack profits then soared into the blackjack-o-sphere.

Today blackjack has five times as many players as does craps. Only those infernal slot machines have surpassed blackjack in the moneymaking category but that’s another story. Blackjack is the king of the table games.

Brief History of the Game BlackJack

Blackjack - or Twenty-One - is said to have originated in French casinos around 1700 and arrived in the U.S. at the beginning of the19th century.

Originally called “vingt-et-un” (French for “twenty-and-one”), it became known as Blackjack if a player got a Jack of spades and an Ace of spades as their first two cards. Today Blackjack ranks as one of the most popular online casino games played around the globe, as well as at online gambling .

Unlike games of pure chance, Black jack players may increase their chances of winning and achieve a greater level of play by developing playing strategies and card skills. Real and online casino Blackjack games are very similar, with the major difference being that with online Blackjack , the dealer shuffles the deck at the beginning of every round.

Computers back in the 1970’s could perform a million Blackjack hand simulations which paved the way for gamblers to produce sophisticated game strategies. As a result, a number of mathematicians, scientists, university professors, and other intellectuals began writing guide books on Blackjack . Casinos naturally became very concerned that computer-generated scientific systems would cut into their potential profits and so many casinos in the 1970’s altered their games from single deck to multi-deck games to counteract these new computer-based strategies.

Ken Uston, a living legend during this time, is also famous for having inserted five computers into the shoes of members of his playing team in 1977. In very little time, these gamblers accumulated in excess of a hundred thousand dollars in winnings. Upon discovering this new method, one of the computers was confiscated and sent to the FBI whose experts concluded that the computer utilized public information on Blackjack playing and was therefore not categorized as a cheating device.

Uston was subsequently barred (not surprisingly) from at least seven of the major Las Vegas casinos as a result of this incredible success. He sued them for violating his civil rights and in 1987 was found dead in a rented flat in Paris. His cause of death still remains a mystery.

Florida Legislature May Continue Blackjack at Seminole Casinos

House officials moved off their proposed rollback of permitted gambling to suggest they could approve retaining blackjack at the Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood Casino and the Seminole Coconut Creek Casino.

The two widely diverse plans for Florida gaming from the state House and Senate are undergoing negotiations to reach a single compromise, and an early return is the acceptance of blackjack at at least some of the Seminole casinos. House officials moved off their proposed rollback of permitted gambling to suggest they could approve retaining blackjack at the Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood Casino and the Seminole Coconut Creek Casino.

The Senate plan went beyond Governor Charlie Crist’s would-be compact with the tribe, bringing blackjack and expanded poker throughout the state and giving exclusives on craps and roulette to the Seminoles. But the House measure was far more conservative, withdrawing blackjack even at Seminole casinos where it has been played for over a year.

The new proposal would allow the tribe exclusive blackjack in Broward County, where racinos compete with tribal Class III slot machines. Blackjack would be forbidden elsewhere, but the Class III slots would be allowed only to Seminole casinos outside Broward, giving the tribe a major exclusive everywhere it operates. In return, the Seminoles would pay $200 million annually.

Crist solved a gaming crisis about to explode when he took office, but legislators successfully sued to block the compact because they weren’t consulted. Now the governor reminds lawmakers of the severe budget deficit the state faces.

“If it (a gambling agreement) doesn’t happen, you know, I may have to cut things out of this budget that are put in there,” said Crist. “There are important things they (legislators) want to do around the state. In some ways the Seminole compact money gives us the opportunity to do those things.”

Asked if his words were meant as a threat to state officials, Crist replied, “Please don’t characterize it that way. It’s not. It’s just reality.”

Online Blackjack Tips and Guides

In online Blackjack never split your 10’s, you know the saying a bird in the hand!
You should always split your Aces and 8’s, regardless of what card the dealer is showing, this just greatly improves your current hand and is worth the risk of double your bet.
Unless you are counting cards, never take insurance, insurance is just very poor odds with the house having a large advantage.
Try to stand on a hard 13 through 16, but only if the card the dealer is showing is a 6 or lower. If the dealer’s showing card is a 7 through an Ace, you should hit, this rule is the basics to playing solid blackjack.
And if the dealer is showing a 4, 5 or a 6, you should stand on a hard 12, better let the deal bust than you risking it.
But if the showing card is a 2 or a 3, or 7 and higher, you should hit a hard 12, the odds on this one are close but are slightly better with you hitting.
You should also continue to hit until you have at least 17 if the dealer’s up card is a 10, this is because the odds of the dealer having a total hand better than 17 are high so you need to risk it to improve your chances.
Lastlyshould hit a soft 17 (you have an Ace) if the dealer’s up card is a 10, your chances are decent for improving your hand and yours chances for busting are low.

BlackJack Rules and Tips for New Players

Blackjack is fairly straightforward once you grow accustomed to playing it. Blackjack rules are not set in stone. In fact, they vary from game to game depending on a small set of variables that the house chooses for the game.
Generally stated, each blackjack player competes only against the dealer, not against other players. Your goal as the player is to beat the dealer by drawing cards until your hand comes close to 21, without exceeding it. If your first two cards total 21, you have what is known as a ‘natural blackjack’. If the dealer gets closer to 21 than you without going over themselves, they win.

Learning to play blackjack online is a great deal easier than trying to learn at a table in a land-based casino. Besides the pressure you feel from the players around you, there is also pressure from facing the dealer. Playing online eases this concern, as you may play unlimited amounts of blackjack on our free play version before placing any real bets. To try playing for free, download our casino software suite; it includes both free and real versions of all our popular games.

Playing blackjack online is very simple, since the software won’t let you make any real errors. Playing is as simple as clicking your mouse. To place a bet simply click on a chip and the software will automatically place this chip in the betting area for you. To remove a bet, right click on the stack in the betting area.

Blackjack rules for the dealer are very simple. If the dealer’s hand is 16 or less, they must take a card. If the dealer’s hand is 17 or more, they must stand. Note that some casinos allow the dealer to hit on soft 17, which gives the house a very small additional advantage. In the Golden Palace software the dealer must stand on all seventeen’s.

Dealers Busting Cards

The concept of dealers busting cards is one of the most essential things to know about while you play. The majority of your decisions will be influenced by the dealer’s up-card, or displayed card. If the dealer is showing a 4, 5, or 6, they are known as busting cards. Essentially, if the dealer has this as their up-card, it’s not a bad idea to assume they have a card with a value of 10 as their hole card. If we take that assumption one step further, we realize the dealer is likely holding either a 14, 15, or 16. Since we know the dealer must draw cards until they reach seventeen, we know they would have to hit a 14, 15, or 16. Since we can presume (not with perfect confidence by any means) that the dealer will also draw a 10-value card, the totals of 14, 15, or 16 are likely to cause the dealer to bust.

4, 5, and 6 as dealer up-cards are thus commonly called ‘dealer busting cards’, and offer an added opportunity in the game. If the dealer shows busting cards, you may be more inclined to double down or split where you wouldn’t normally.

Splitting a Pair

When you are dealt a pair of like cards in blackjack, you have the option to split them. The rule of thumb is, always split Aces and 8s.

For example, you are dealt two 8’s on your initial cards. If you split those (a good idea) you will be playing two separate hands, each starting with an 8. Probability dictates that you should get two eighteens out of the deal, instead of a paltry 16 which you originally had in your hand. You can also gauge your decision to split by looking at the dealer\’s cards and seeing if they are bust cards. This goes both ways though, as some times it is best to stand on a low total if the dealer is showing busting cards. More on Splitting and How to Win

Doubling Down

Doubling down is the act of increasing your bet mid-hand when you see a good opportunity. The primary ‘good opportunity’ available at the blackjack table is the dealer showing busting cards. This concept becomes very important in the case of doubling down. The majority of casinos allow you to double down on 9, 10, or 11. Always double down on these totals if the dealer has busting cards showing. Otherwise, double down at your own discretion. It is best to always double down on an 11 as it gives you a great chance at a good hand, but never double down on 11 when the dealer is showing an Ace, because if you achieve a 21 and the dealer does also, the dealer always wins.
